This was actually my first time participating in a sketch challenge, and I’m not going to lie, it took me a little while to figure my plan! Once I chose the wave-patterned Designer Series Paper, I realized it really needed to fill the larger rectangles in the sketch. That’s when I turned the layout into a landscape design, and everything started falling into place. I also experimented with several ideas for the sentiment until I tried a stitched circle instead of a rectangle. The minute I placed that circle on the card, I knew it was exactly what the design needed!

💜 CREATIVE TIP: Don’t be afraid to flip, rotate, or simplify a sketch or swap out shapes! Sometimes the smallest change, like turning the layout landscape or replacing a rectangle with a circle, is exactly what helps a design come together. Sketches are meant to inspire your creativity, not limit it.

The combination of Blueberry Bushel, Pool Party, and the wave-patterned Designer Series Paper (DSP) creates a calm, relaxing backdrop for the life vest and paddle. The subtle bird silhouettes featured in the DSP add just enough detail without competing with the focal point.

How I Made the Sketch My Own

My Changes:

• Turned the sketch from portrait to landscape
• Replaced the rectangular sentiment with a stitched circle
• Added a life vest and paddle on the sentiment circle for a focal point
• Layered the DSP rectangles on a Basic White panel for contrast

I always enjoy seeing how different crafters interpret the same sketch. That’s really one of my favorite things about sketch challenges!

Inside the Card

I like to carry the card design to the inside whenever possible. I added a coordinating strip of Designer Series Paper and a few stamped birds to finish this card while leaving plenty of room for a personal birthday message.
